UFC Fight for the Troops 2: Matt Wiman Impresses With Unanimous Decision Win

Matt Wiman showed some impressive ground and pound, as he took it to Cole Miller for three rounds and nabbed the unanimous decision at UFC Fight for the Troops 2.

Miller looked as though he had no answer for Wiman’s intensity and the judges agreed, scoring the bout 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

Before the first round started, the two UFC fighters stood across from each other, talking trash and taunting each other. From there, the bout began and Miller showed a nice Muay Thai clinch, landing a few hard knees to Wiman’s mid-section. It wasn’t enough, though, as Wiman mixed it up nicely on the feet and landed some strikes that definitely gave him an advantage on the score cards.

Miller attempted to pull guard, but it didn’t work and Wiman punished him from the top, eventually landing in Miller’s guard. Wiman worked from half-guard, scoring points with short elbows and punches, continuing to score points while Miller stayed on his back. It appeared as though Wiman won the round with effective striking on the feet and on the ground.

The second round started with Miller trying to keep the battle on his feet, but the fight went to the ground again where Wiman continued to land shots, scoring more and more from half-guard. After returning to a standing position, Wiman still landed clean shots and pressured Miller, making the American Top Team fighter back pedal.

Wiman put Miller back on the canvas and continued to shower him from both a standing position and within the guard. From this point, Miller provided no offense to where he could be ahead in the round, as it closed out with Wiman peppering Miller with short strikes from half-guard.

The final round started with Wiman being the obvious aggressor on the feet. An attempted guard pull by Miller had Wiman land right on top of him. From there, Wiman returned to grounding and pounding Miller, not giving him a chance to produce anything from his back. Wiman continued to transition from standing over Miller to working in his guard where he landed definitive strikes and pulverizing elbows. In the final minute, Wiman entertained the crowd by attempting, what looked like, a soft cartwheel into more ground and pound. The final stanza finished with Wiman walking away the clear winner, taking the unanimous decision.

“I was going through a lot of nerves before this fight,” Miller told Joe Rogan after the fight. “It’s probably the most nervous I’ve ever been.”

The win represents Wiman’s third straight in the UFC, after dropping two in a row prior to his current streak.
