UFC Fight Night 40 post-fight facts: Matt Brown gains ground on Chuck Liddell’s KO streak

Matt Brown (19-11 MMA, 12-5 UFC) once again proved why he’s one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC welterweight division with a thrilling victory over Erick Silva (16-5 MMA, 4-4 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 40 headliner.

It was the organization’s first visit to Cincinnati since October 2007, and the fighters more than made up for lost time as seven of the 13 bouts on the card ended by knockout, capped off by Brown’s third-round finish of Silva in the main event.

Brown already held several knockout records in the welterweight division, but his finish of “Indio” only added to his tremendous resume, which now includes a UFC division-leading seven-fight winning streak.

GENERAL

Brown earned $100,000 in UFC Fight Night 40 fight-night bonuses while Silva and Johnny Eduardo each received $50,000.

UFC Fight Night 40 drew an announced attendance of 6,143 for a live gate of $415,000.

Total fight time of the 13-bout card was 2:02:33.

Betting favorites went 5-8 at the event. The eight underdog victories tied UFC 152 and UFC on FOX 3 for the most underdog winners at a single event in UFC history. UFC Fight Night 38 holds the record with nine underdogs.

MAIN CARD

Brown earned his 12th UFC welterweight victory, which ties him for the fifth most of any fighter in history behind Georges St-Pierre (19), Matt Hughes (16), Josh Koscheck (14) and Jon Fitch (13).

Brown’s seven-fight UFC winning streak is the longest active streak in the welterweight division. It is also tied with bantamweight champion Renan Barao and middleweight champion Chris Weidman for the second longest active winning streak on the UFC roster behind light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (11).

Brown’s current winning streak is the longest run of victories in his entire MMA career. His longest streak before this run was just three fights.

Brown has earned his past five UFC victories by knockout. His current five-fight knockout streak is tied with Thiago Alves for the second longest run of KO finishes in UFC history behind Chuck Liddell (seven).

Brown’s nine knockout or submission finishes during his UFC tenure are tied with Cain Velasquez and Rich Franklin for the fifth most of any fighter in company history behind Anderson Silva (11), Vitor Belfort (11), Hughes (10) and Liddell (10).

Brown’s nine knockout victories under the UFC banner are the most in welterweight history.

Brown has been rewarded with at least one fight-night bonus in his past three UFC appearances for a total of $200,000.

Silva has alternated wins and losses throughout his eight-fight UFC career.

Silva has suffered all four of his UFC defeats by a different method.

Silva has suffered his past two UFC losses by knockout. Those KO defeats are the only ones of his MMA career.

Silva has earned a fight-night bonus in five of his past six UFC bouts.

Constantinos Philippou (13-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC) snapped the first two-fight losing skid of his career for his first victory since December 2012.

Philippou has earned seven of his 13 career victories by knockout.

Lorenz Larkin (14-3 MMA, 1-3 UFC) suffered the first knockout loss of his 18-fight career.

Daron Cruickshank (15-4 MMA, 5-2 UFC) earned a knockout via head kick for the third time in his UFC career. That ties Belfort for the most head-kick finishes in UFC history.

Erik Koch (13-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC) fell to 1-1 since returning to the UFC lightweight division.

Koch has suffered two of his past three defeats by knockout.

Neil Magny (10-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) has earned all three of his UFC victories by decision.

Tim Means (20-6-1 MMA, 2-3 UFC) has suffered all three of his UFC defeats by decision.

Soa Palelei (21-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) has earned all 21 of his professional victories by knockout or submission. “The Hulk” has defeated his past 11 opponents by knockout.

Palelei’s three-fight UFC winning streak is the third longest in the heavyweight division behind champion Velasquez (four) and top contender Fabricio Werdum (four).

Palelei recorded his third UFC knockout victory from mount position, tying Evan Tanner and Matt Lindland for the most KO finishes from the position in company history.

Ruan Potts (8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) suffered the first knockout loss of his 10-fight career.

Chris Cariaso (17-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) improved to 4-2 since dropping to the UFC flyweight division.

Cariaso’s three-fight UFC winning streak is tied with Ali Bagautinov for the second longest active streak in the flyweight division behind champion Demetrious Johnson (five).

Louis Smolka (7-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) suffered the first decision loss of his career.

PRELIMINARY CARD

Ed Herman’s (22-10 MMA, 9-6 UFC) nine UFC middleweight victories are tied for the fifth most in divisional history behind Anderson Silva (13), Yushin Okami (13), Chris Leben (12), Michael Bisping (10) and Nate Marquardt (10).

Rafael Natal (17-6-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC) suffered his first decision loss since Sept. 15, 2010 – a span of 1,333 days (more than three years) and nine fights.

Darrell Montague (13-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) suffered the first decision loss of his 17-fight professional career.

Zak Cummings (17-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) won a fight by decision for the first time since Feb. 14, 2009 – a span of 1,911 days (more than five years) and 11 fights.

Yan Cabral (11-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) suffered the first decision loss of his career.

Johnny Eduardo (27-9 MMA, 2-1 UFC) has earned victories in 13 of his past 14 fights.

Eduardo earned his first knockout victory since Oct. 17, 2009 – a span of 1,666 days (more than four years) and five fights.

Eddie Wineland (21-10-1 MMA, 3-4 UFC) fell to 3-4 in his past seven UFC fights.

Wineland suffered just the third knockout loss of his 32-fight career.

Nik Lentz (25-6-2 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) is 4-1 since dropping to the UFC featherweight division. His only loss at 145 pounds came to No. 1 contender and upcoming title challenger Chad Mendes.

Lentz has earned seven of his nine UFC victories by decision.

Manny Gamburyan (13-9 MMA, 4-7 UFC) fell to 2-4 since making his return to the UFC in June 2011.

Gamburyan has been defeated by decision in six of his nine career defeats.

Justin Salas (12-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC) earned a knockout victory for the first time since July 24, 2010 – a span of 1,386 days and seven fights.

Ben Wall (7-2-1 MMA, 0-2 UFC) has suffered both of his UFC/professional losses by knockout.

Albert Tumenov (13-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) has earned his past seven MMA victories by knockout.

Anthony Lapsley (22-7 MMA 0-2 UFC) suffered the first knockout loss of his 31-fight career.
