UFC 178 medical suspensions: Tim Kennedy suffers orbital blowout fracture

A controversial middleweight contest left Tim Kennedy with an orbital injury, according to UFC 178 medical suspensions released today by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

After rocking Yoel Romero in the second round, Kennedy succumbed to a flurry of punches in the third round of of the pay-per-view bout at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. He is now restricted from contact for one month and must receive clearance for his injury in order to avoid a six-month suspension.

Romero also received more than a monthlong suspension and is barred from contact for one month. A total of 12 fighters were benched following the event.

In other notable suspensions, Cat Zingano, who returned from a year-plus layoff to stop Amanda Nunes for a title shot, will need clearance for her upper back or will face a six-month term.

The full list of UFC 178 medical suspensions includes:

  • Eddie Alvarez: suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days
  • Dustin Poirier: suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days
  • Yoel Romero: suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days
  • Tim Kennedy: suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days; additionally, must clear left orbital inferior blowout fracture with opthalmologist or plastic surgeon or no contest for 180 days
  • Cat Zingano: must have upper back cleared by a doctor or no contest for 180 days
  • Amanda Nunes: suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days for left eyebrow laceration
  • Takeya Mizugaki: suspended 60 days with no contact for 45 days
  • James Krause: suspended 45 days with no contact for 21 days
  • Stephen Thompson: must have right eye cleared by an opthalmologist and right hand X-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic doctor or no contest for 180 days
  • Jon Tuck: must have right shoulder and right foot cleared by a doctor or no contest for 180 days
  • Cody Gibson: suspended 30 days with no contact for 15 days
