Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez fought Tatsuya Kawajiri once before, walking out of the ring with a decision victory. At Saturday’s Diaz vs. Daley event in San Diego, Melendez would have nothing to do with a decision.
He put the pressure on Kawajiri from the get go, finishing the Top 10 fighter in a little over three minutes.
Staking his claim to the top spot in the lightweight division, Melendez spoke one-on-one with MMAWeekly.com after the fight, stressing how important it was to get a win for his family, and noting his desire to to unify the Strikeforce belt with whoever happens to hold the UFC belt when the powers that be will put such a fight together.
