Ronda Rousey congratulates Holly Holm on 'Saturday Night Live' – very briefly

There was almost no getting around it. Ronda Rousey had to acknowledge the biggest news of her career as part of “Saturday Night Live.”

Rousey hosted the long-running show on Saturday night, and in her opening monologue she had to give a shout-out to Holly Holm – who stunned the world in November by knocking Rousey out in the second round at UFC 193 to win the women’s bantamweight title as a massive underdog.

“It’s also the first time I’m talking to my fans since my loss to Holly Holm in November – which, by the way, was a fight Holly deserved to win,” Rousey said in the monologue. “And I just wanted to take a minute to sincerely congratulate her.”

And with that, Rousey clapped her hands one time – and as the audience began its applause, Rousey immediately thrust her arm out in a stopping motion and declared, “That’s enough!”

With that, the show was on. Rousey appeared in most of the show’s sketches throughout the 90-minute episode. One was a pre-taped piece that featured her as a high school student being picked on by a popular girl bully. Naturally, Rousey took care of that problem with her fists and feet.

Rousey became just the third women’s athlete in the 41-season history of the show to host, following Chris Evert in 1989 and Nancy Kerrigan in 1994. Her musical guest on the long running NBC sketch comedy series was Selena Gomez.

She currently is on a break from the UFC while she shoots a pair of movies. She won’t return until later in the year – but when she does, it likely will be in a title fight against the winner of Holm and her other rival, Miesha Tate. Those two fight for Holm’s title in the UFC 197 co-main event in March.
