Keoni Koch injured, Jeff Curran meets Pedro Munhoz for 135 title at RFA 9

jeff-curran-4.jpgAfter pulling out of a flyweight title fight for Resurrection Fighting Alliance, Jeff Curran now will return to bantamweight and get a shot at a belt.

Curran (34-15) will step in for an injured Keoni Koch (5-0) and will meet Pedro Munhoz (8-0) for the RFA 135-pound title next month at RFA 9. RFA officials announced the change late Friday.

“RFA 9: Curran vs. Munhoz” takes place Aug. 16 at StubHub Center in Los Angeles. A six-fight main card airs live on AXS TV.

Curran in May got back in the win column after nearly a year off when he beat Josh Killion at Extreme Challenge 227. Previously he had been cut from a stint in the UFC with a two-fight losing skid to Scott Jorgensen and Johnny Eduardo.

Curran had dropped down to flyweight from a lengthy run at 135 pounds. He was scheduled to meet Sergio Pettis for RFA’s 125-pound title in June. But now he’ll bounce back up to bantamweight for a shot at a title there, instead.

Munhoz was supposed to fight Koch at RFA 8, but Koch was forced out with an injury. Now lightning strikes twice. Munhoz in June submitted Mitch Jackson with 11 seconds left in the first round at RFA 8. In November, he debuted with the promotion with a first-round submission of Bill Kamery at RFA 5. Of his eight wins, five have come by decision.

Koch, the brother of the UFC’s Erik Koch, was looking to stay unbeaten after returning to the sport in April after nearly three years away. He picked up a unanimous decision win for a regional show in his native Iowa – the first time he went the distance in a fight after four submissions in his first four bouts.

With the change, the main card of RFA 9 now includes:
