Ken Shamrock on Special Rules MMA Fight with James Toney: “I Will Beat Him Up”

Ken Shamrock and James Toney are going to meet in a mixed martial arts match… sort of, somewhere, at some time.

The fight has been announced, but thus far, the promotion that will present the fight does not have a name, there has not been a venue or location announced, nor has a date been set, other than sometime this fall.

The fight is technically a mixed martial arts bout, but it won’t fall under the widely accepted “Unified Rules” that most popular promotions, like the UFC, Bellator, and Strikeforce, operate under. The most notable changes to the rules are that following a takedown the fight will be stood up after 30 seconds, regardless of positioning, and the fight will consist of eight, three-minute rounds.

Shamrock says he sees the fight as an opportunity to really draw strikers into mixed martial arts and that a fight like this promotes both the sport of MMA and the sport of boxing.

At the end of the day, no matter what any detractors may think, Shamrock says the whole thing boils down to one idea, “The bottom line is entertainment… but yet, you’re still gonna get a fight.”
