Less than 24 hours after his opponent, Rony Jason, was forced off the UFC Fight Night 29 fight card, Jeremy Stephens has also been removed due to injury.
UFC officials made the announcement on Monday that Stephens had suffered an injury while training and would not be able to compete on the Oct. 9 event.
On Sunday, the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission released a statement concerning Jason’s status.
“The Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) informs that the fighter Rony ‘Jason’ Mariano Bezerra de Lima, scheduled to compete in the ‘UFC Combate 4: Maia vs. Shields’ on the 9th of October in Barueri (SP), had his participation in the event vetoed after examinations by the Medical Committee of the entity.”
With both fighters injured, the bout was removed from the card altogether. Due to the loss of the scheduled fight, a welterweight match between Rousimar Palhares and Mike Pierce has been promoted from the preliminary bouts to the main card on Fox Sports 1.
A welterweight showdown between Demian Maia and Jake Shields headlines the UFC Fight Night 29 event at the Jose Correa Gymnasium in Barueri, São Paulo, Brazil.
