Impressive Submission Aside, Erick Silva Says “It’s Still Too Soon” for Shot at Georges St-Pierre

Erick SilvaErick Silva’s performance at UFC on Fuel TV 10 on Saturday night was extremely impressive.

In little more than a minute, he stuffed a Jason High takedown attempt, took his back, and finished the fight with an armbar.

But as impressive as his victory was, Silva believes that throwing his name into the mix for a shot at UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is premature.

“I think it’s still too soon,” he said at the post-fight press conference in Fortaleza, Brazil. “I’m not at all worried about the title belt right now. All I want to do is do my work.

“I’m just going to wait for the UFC to schedule my next fight, and when they do, I’m going to focus on it.”

Silva debuted in the Octagon as one of the more highly touted Brazilian prospects in recent memory, bringing with him a 12-1 professional record.

He won his first UFC bout by way of knockout, but stumbled in his sophomore effort. It appeared Silva was en route to a TKO stoppage, but was instead disqualified in his fight against Carlo Prater for illegal blows to the back of the head.

He followed that fight with a submission of Charlie Brenneman before losing a unanimous decision to Jon Fitch.

The victory over High put him back on track, but Silva would be just fine continuing to build on his efforts before he is blinded by shiny gold belts.

“If I could do 20 fights before the belt, I would,” he declared.

“When I go for the belt, I want to have it around my waist. So I want to have a lot of experience. But (fighting for the title) is not at all part of my plans right now.”
