Georges St-Pierre vs. Anderson Silva super fight? Chris Weidman has his own plan

anderson-silva-44.jpgMONTREAL – Following UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s victory over Nick Diaz in Saturday’s UFC 158 pay-per-view headliner, his next opponent was announced: co-main-event winner Johny Hendricks.

St-Pierre, though, couldn’t shake questions about a potential super fight with middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva. Although the potential cross-division, dual-champ bout has drawn interest for a couple years, it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.

In addition to the expected St-Pierre (24-2 MMA, 18-2 UFC) vs. Hendricks bout (15-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC), Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC) is slated to fight division foe and top contender Chris Weidman (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) at UFC 162 in July. Should Silva’s UFC records for consecutive wins (16) and title defenses (10) come to an end, don’t expect him to immediately jump into a bout with St-Pierre; New York’s Weidman said he’s willing to give the champ an immediate rematch.

“If [Weidman] wants to give him a rematch if he beats him, I’m sure people would want to see it,” White said. “I talked to Chris Weidman myself, and he looked me right in the eye and said, ‘I’m telling you, I apologize that I’m going to f— up your superfights and be your next champion. But what I will do for you is I’ll give him an immediate rematch in Madison Square Garden as soon as he loses.’

“It’s verbatim what the guy said to me.”

Just a few short weeks ago, White was trumpeting the possibility of a Silva vs. St-Pierre or Silva vs. Jon Jones superfight. He went as far as promising one by the end of 2013.

“GSP is going to defend his title against Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva will defend his title this summer, and before the end of this year, we will see a super fight with either GSP and Anderson Silva, or Anderson Silva and Jon Jones,” White said this past month. “One of them is coming.”

However, the three longtime champs and pound-for-pound kingpins will be focused on their own divisions for the foreseeable future.

In addition to St-Pierre vs. Hendricks, which both fighters suggested won’t happen until at least mid- or late-summer, Silva vs. Weidman will tie up the middleweight champ until at least late 2013. Additionally, Jones (17-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC) meets Chael Sonnen (27-12-1 MMA, 6-5 UFC) in late April, and recent winner Lyoto Machida could be up next after that.

The chatter about super fights is likely to continue throughout the year, especially if St-Pierre, Silva and Jones continue their dominance. However, for the time being, just don’t expect them to fight each other anytime soon.
