Dana White: UFC not booking Daniel Cormier vs. Alexander Gustafsson – yet

While Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson may fight each other at some point, it won’t be in their next bouts.

Cormier (15-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) and Gustafsson (16-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC), respectively ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA light-heavyweight rankings, are both coming off high-profile losses. Cormier fell short in a title fight with reigning champ Jon Jones earlier this year, and Gustafsson recently suffered a knockout loss to Anthony Johnson in a title eliminator.

UFC President Dana White said it’d be an intriguing matchup, but it’s not one the organization plans to book next.

“Cormier’s got another fight set up right now, and we actually have another fight for Gustafsson too,” White said after this past weekend’s UFC 183 event. “After those two fight these fights, it’d make sense.”

White didn’t say what those fights are, of course.

Cormier will look to rebound from his first career loss. After opening his career with a 15-0 mark, which included wins at both heavyweight and light heavyweight, he fell short in a heavily promoted grudge match with Jones at UFC 182. Following the Jan. 3 event, Cormier said he wanted to take a small break to avoid “championship hangover” before returning to the cage.

Gustafsson, meanwhile, was a victory away from earning a rematch with Jones, whom he lost to in 2013’s “Fight of the Year.” However, Johnson pulled off the upset in their Jan. 24 UFC on FOX 14 headliner and spoiled those plans.
