Although Conor McGregor’s recent decision to attain a boxing license in the state of California is far from any reasonable intent to fight the oft rumored, but mostly mythological, bout with retired world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather, it’s certainly a sign that McGregor is keeping all of his options open as he enters a pivotal point in his career.
McGregor is coming off of a victory over Eddie Alvarez, which put his name in the history books as the first UFC fighter to hold championship belts in two weight classes simultaneously.
After he was forced to relinquish one of those belts, and has publicly stated that he wants a bigger piece of the UFC’s financial pie, McGregor’s move into boxing may be more than symbolic.
He’s certainly not lacking the confidence to forge another career if the proper financial incentive presents itself.

In a recent question and answer session in Belfast, McGregor shot down the naysayers that doubt he could be competitive in the boxing world, specifically addressing Floyd Mayweather and Paul Malignaggi.
“With the work ethic that I have, focused solely on the sport of boxing, there’s no telling what I could do (in boxing). I would not go in there just to show up, I’d go in there to knock (Floyd Mayweather) out, and that’s it.”
