CABMMA suspends Rousimar Palhares 120 days following UFC Fight Night 29

The Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (CABMMA), Brazil’s regulatory MMA body, today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com that the fighter has been suspended 120 days following his actions at UFC Fight Night 29.

In Wednesday’s FOX Sports 1-televised event at Jose Correa Arena in the Brazilian city of Barueri, Palhares (15-5 MMA, 8-4 UFC) submitted fellow welterweight Mike Pierce (17-6 MMA, 9-4 UFC) in just 31 seconds. However, the Brazilian fighter continued torquing the ankle lock after physical and audible taps from Pierce – and even after the referee hopped onto the fighter to stop the fight. Citing “unsportsmanlike conduct,” the UFC snubbed Palhares when fight-night bonuses were given out, even though he claimed the night’s only submission. UFC President Dana White then announced his release on Thursday.

According to CABMMA, Palhares’ suspension won’t commence until after his routine medical suspension ends (the length of the media suspension wasn’t disclosed). Regardless, it’s likely to put the 33-year-old fighter on the sidelines for up to half a year.

“The determination of the period of suspension considers, among other things, the athlete’s recurrence of unsportsmanlike conduct of the same nature,” a CABMMA statement read.

Palhares received a 90-day suspension in 2010 for a similar offense in a UFC fight.
