BREAKING: UFC Champ Fabricio Werdum Injured, Drops Off Super Bowl Card

BREAKING: UFC Champ Fabricio Werdum Injured, Drops Off Super Bowl Card

Less than 24 hours after Cain Velasquez had to drop out of the UFC 196 main event opposite Fabricio Werdum, the champion has reportedly had to withdraw as well.

Velasquez on Sunday pulled out of the Super Bowl Weekend headliner due to a back injury, but was quickly replaced by fellow contender Stipe Micioc, keeping Werdum on the Feb. 6 card. Separate reports from respected Brazilian reporters Anna Hissa and Guilherme Cruz on Monday, however, also put Werdum out of the bout due to injury. Hissa reported an injury to Werdum’s toe and back.

Fabricio WerdumWerdum told Hissa that he had been training with a cracked toe, which kept him from working on his kicks, but he was attemption to train through that injury. On Friday, he also strained his back. Werdum said that he got a massage and saw a doctor before attempting to spar on Monday. When he got back in the gym, he realized that he was unable to train properly for Miocic, at which point he and his team decided he would have to withdraw from the fight.

He admitted, via translation, “If Cain (remained in the) fight, I (would) fight because we have a history, and he had cancelled that fight twice previously.”

It’s a devastating blow to what is annually a strong pay-per-view weekend for the UFC. Without the heavyweight main event, the drawing power of the card drops off considerably with the initial co-main event featuring a welterweight fight between former champion Johny Hendricks and rising contender Stephen Thompson.

There is not another bout currently on the card that would generally be considered a pay-per-view main event.

It remains to be seen what the UFC will do to fill the headlining slot at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, as UFC officials did not respond to a request for comment.
