After beating each other senseless, Mark Hunt and ‘Bigfoot’ Silva pose for picture together

antonio-silva-mark-hunt-ufc-fight-night-33Here’s a thought. How often do you kick and punch and bloody someone up for 25 minutes, then immediately go to them to trade a hug?

That, of course, is what makes MMA unique in the sports landscape, and that’s what Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva did after basically destroying each other for five rounds in the main event of UFC Fight Night 33.

Their heavyweight battle, which already is drawing raves as arguably the best heavyweight fight of all time, and certainly one of the best fights of the year, took place at Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Australia – Hunt’s home turf. And though he was clearly the fan favorite heading into the fight, and throughout it, by the end, even Aussies had to have left the venue not caring about the outcome as much as they cared about having just witnessed something special.

Hunt and Silva walked out of the octagon a pair of bloody messes – and neither was the winner. The fight was declared a majority draw. One judge saw it 48-47 for Hunt, while two others had it 47-47 – a result that could be achieved when one judge had three rounds for Hunt, but a 10-8 round for Silva, and the other had three rounds for Silva, but a 10-8 round for Hunt.

After the fight, the two met backstage, where they snapped a photo together in their street clothes. Hunt posted it to his Twitter account, saying, “Brothers in arms well done Bigfoot 1 love.”

Whether or not the two will rematch to try to settle things remains to be seen, but few would likely complain.
