There is no way in hell Chael is going to try to win this fight with standup. He's probably trained more boxing lately, but he's only going to try to use it to close the distance and force a ground fight, like he ALWAYS does. Rua's striking skill is near Jones and Silva's level, and his power is probably still better. Obviously Rua's footwork has declined as his knees have gotten worse, and his conditioning is also suspect, so I think this really is going to be an extreme example of where the whole fight boils down to whether Sonnen can take Rua down and grind him down, or whether Rua can knock Sonnen out. Thankfully, I think this will be an unusually exciting fight despite the fact that this sort of fight usually ends up being pretty boring. Both of these guys are unusually aggressive, exciting, and mentally tough fighters, and what Rua lacks in physical ability he makes up for in having more overall skill and will probably at least be able to make things somewhat interesting by threatening with submissions even if he is taken down, though I still think he'd be at a big disadvantage if he winds up on the bottom in a ground fight.

Call me naive, but wouldn't it make more sense to shadow box with your eyes open and looking in the same direction as your punches, so as to better condition yourself to be looking in the correct direction when you punch? I know it's generally considered better to look near or around an opponents neck or chest level when trying to simultaneously throw and avoid punches and kicks, but it looks a bit like Chael is looking at the ground or has his eyes nearly closed when throwing punches in his shadow-boxing routines. Maybe this doesn't really matter if you're Chael Sonnon, and nowhere near the level of high level pro boxers, or top level mma strikers.
