Interviews - UFC 151 - Jones vs. Henderson - http://www.MMAWeekly.com/ -- The mixed martial arts world was shocked when UFC president Dana White announced that the UFC 151: Jones vs. Henderson card was not only undergoing change, it was being cancelled altogether. The key reason cited by the UFC's brash boss was that when UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones' opponent, Dan Henderson, fell out due to injury, Jones declined to face Chael Sonnen as a replacement on one week's notice. Jones has since received the brunt of the criticism

I used to be a fan of Jon Jones before he turned down his scheduled card. He says he's a martial artist but not with that kind of an attitude. LIke a lot of other fans who said it already, it looks like he's nothing but a paper champion. The business of MMA fights is just that now, a business. Very commercialized. Greg Jackson and Jones' manager have to look at it from a cash cow perspective and marketability of their fighter by having him hang on to his belt. But a true champion, regardless of having a belt or not, should convey that character. A belt reflects a champion and a champion doesn't need a belt to reflect he is indeed one.

As the main card for UFC 151, Jones should indeed shoulder the responsibility of seeing the event through, shouldering the responsibility of all the other cards from the other fighters fighting in it. I have read all the tweets from the other fighters and they have every reason to be upset. Just because Jones is now living the highlife of big paydays and endorsements, that doesn't mean everyone else under that card he's on get the same thing too. He should truly hold himself accountable for that, and not just as an official press release to quiet down the noise, it's one of the responsibilities of a champion from a publicity standpoint.

At the end of the day, take away Greg Jackson, take away the belt, take away the endorsements and lucrative contracts, the commercialized mentality of preparing for MMA fights, just cut away to two guys challenging each other, clearly the champion in this case isn't much of a champion if he has to turn down someone who challenged him because he didn't prepare for the challenger's skillset.

jon jones didn't prepare for chael sonnen's "skillset"? let me get this straight. jones prepared for dan henderson, a great wrestler with punching power (who ko'd fedor, feijão, sobral, bisping, etc), but jones didn't prepare for sonnen, who's also a great wrestler, but doesn't have any punching power, and who also hadn't trained for any fight? so, if jones was supposedly prepared for henderson, how was he supposedly unprepard for sonnen's "skillset"?

The mark of a true warrior, let alone a champion is the ability to take on a fight at a moment's notice. If you really do train as hard as you say you are every waking moment of your life, then in theory you should be prepared to take on challengers of varying skills and styles. It's the way of Bushido. That is why samurais of ancient times have this legend about them that carries on to today, that everyone admires and wish they could have that mindset. Because wherever they went, they dealt with challengers. They didn't go "give me a month for training camp to get ready for you."
It's the whole bleed and sweat in training and preparation so you wouldn't have to bleed in battle.

@Truth: it must be nice to have a crystal ball telling you how every fight is going down, why don't you try predicting the end result of every fight on the next UFC card and see how many you get right, i bet you'd be wrong on at least half

Jon Jones turned down the fight against Chael Sonnen, because he was afraid.

Can anyone remember the fight between Chael Sonnen and Brian Stann, where Sonnen DEMOLISHED AND DESTROYED Stann? Stann didn't stand a chance and he didn't stand at all. He spent his time on the ground, on the back, getting beat up.
Jones and Stann were training partners and maybe they both trained together. Maybe Jones wanted to prepare Stann for Sonnens wrestling. Maybe Stann had a better takedown-defense against Jones and maybe Jones though Stann would be ready for Sonnen.
If he did so, then he was clearly wrong.

But how about Jones? How about his past few fights. He has the size and reach advantage over basically everyone in this division and he is enjoying that quite a lot. No matter who he faced and how good and talented they were. They instantly turned braindead, when they faced him and played his game. They were facing him on distance and got elbows to their faces from a mile distance.

Would Sonnen do the same? No.
Yeah, he would maybe lose the fight, since he can't really deal with punishment, but he would expose Jones for sure. He would rush in, something that you have to do against Jones. He would take him down and beat him up for a couple of rounds.
Jones invincibility would be gone, since then everyone would try to do the same, close the distance, take him down and beat the crap out of him.

Greg Jackson was right. Taking the fight against Sonnen would be the worst mistake of Jones' career, since he wouldn't have his size-reach-advantage in all of his following fights, simply because of Sonnen and his superior wrestling.
