World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo plans fighting return at WSOF 4

ray-sefo.jpgWorld Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo is planning a return to the cage – to fight for his own promotion.

“Sugar” Ray (2-1) on Monday said he will fight on his promotion’s fourth show this August, though his opponent has not yet been revealed. Sefo responded to a series of tweets in the affirmative when asked if he’d be stepping into the cage again. MMAFighting.com brought word of the news on Monday.

WSOF 4 takes place Aug. 10 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. The main card, which is likely to include a recently reported fight between Gesias Cavalcante and Tyson Griffin, airs on NBC Sports Network. It’s not yet known where if Sefo’s fight would be part of the main card or the prelims.

Although certainly unique for the president of a promotion to fight on his own show, Sefo always kept the door cracked for a possible return to competition. Now it appears he’ll kick it wide open.

The New Zealand native, a virtual legend in the sport of kickboxing, most recently fought MMA for Strikeforce in 2011, suffering a first-round submission loss to Valentijn Overeem. That fight was part of Strikeforce’s heavyweight tournament as a reserve bout in the alternate bracket.

He had two fights prior to that, winning with a head-kick knockout against Min Soo Kim in 2005 and stopping Kevin Jordan with a second-round TKO on a Strikeforce Challengers show in September 2009.

Sefo, who turned 42 in February, fought in eight K-1 World Grand Prix finals as a kickboxer. But it’s been more than a year since he competed in that arena. In March 2012, he lost a unanimous decision to Mirko Filipovic in Croatia in what would be the final fight of “Cro Cop’s” career. Before that, he lost to current WSOF fighter Tyrone Spong by unanimous decision in the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix.

It’s been a bit of a rough go for Sefo’s kickboxing career in the waning years with just a 3-8 record since 2006, including the losses to Filipovic and Spong, plus heavyweight legends like Peter Aerts, Semmy Schilt and Badr Hari.

The striker also has dabbled in boxing, going 5-1 and last fighting in 2001, and is a six-time Muay Thai world champ.

In 2012, he took the helm of WSOF, which held its first event in November of that year in Las Vegas. WSOF 2 took place this past March in Atlantic City, N.J., and WSOF 3 is set for Friday at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

A heavyweight fight on that card between Rolles Gracie and Dave Huckaba was scrapped due to a Gracie wrist injury, which could leave the door open for one of those two to fight Sefo at WSOF 4.
