World Series of Fighting 4 Results: Tyrone Spong Moves to 2-0, Nick Newell Remains Undefeated

Tyrone Spong-478x270Kickboxing standout turned mixed martial artist Tryone Spong improved his MMA record to 2-0 in the World Seris of Fighting 4 main event on Saturday, defeating Angel DeAnda unanimous decision.

DeAnda landed his right hand early, but Spong’s powerful leg kicks were the tale of the opening round.

Spong continued to deliver kicks in the second round that echoed throughout the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. DeAnda weathered the leg attack and landed his shots, but became less mobile as the fight wore on.

The kicks kept coming in the final round, but DeAnda took them and fired back.  In the end, Spong earned a clear-cut unanimous decision win.

“I didn’t really have a strategy.  I didn’t know too much about him, but I do know now that he’s tough as nails.  He’s a strong guy, a tough fighter,” said Spong following the win.  “Really, he’s tough.”

Marlon Moraes extended his winning streak to five fights by defeating Bellator newcomer Brandon Hempleman by unanimous decision in the co-main event.

Moraes knocked Hempleman down in the first round with a right hook.  He swarmed the downed Hempleton with a series of strikes, but was unable to finish.

He battered Hempleman’s lead leg with kicks.  Badly bruised, Hempleman was barely able to put weight on it in the second round, but continued to fight.

Hempleman proved his toughness in making it the distance, but it was a one-sided affair.

One-armed fighter Nick Newell improved his undefeated record to 10-0 with a first-round submission win over Keon Caldwell.  Newell came out aggressive and used his wrestling ability to get the fight to the ground.  He applied a guillotine choke and Caldwell was forced to tap out.

“We had some stuff to catch him on the feet with, but he was cutting good angles and I was trying to get angles and catch him coming in.  I had a bunch of ways I thought I would beat him and this was one of them,” said Newell following the fight.

“I know what it is like to be at the bottom and now I’m at the top and I’m not letting anyone take it away from me,” he added.

World Series of Fighting president Ray Sefo set his suit aside and wrapped his hands one more time to face Dave Huckaba.

Sefo had success early with leg kicks, but missed with a high kick midway through the second round and got caught with his hands down.  Huckaba landed a left hook that stunned Sefo.  He finished with a series of strikes as Sefo appeared out on his feet.  The referee stepped in and rightfully stopped the fight.
