Video: Fighters 'weigh in' on Cage Warriors' new 60 percent penalty

Earlier this month, England’s Cage Warriors Fighting Championship made some waves when it announced new penalties for fighters under its banner who miss weight.

After an event that saw plenty of fighters miss the mark, Cage Warriors jacked its missed-weight penalty to the moon at 60 percent – no matter how much a fighter is off by. The new fine goes in effect next month at Cage Warriors 69 in England.

Previously, the promotion had fines in place of 25 percent up to 2.2 pounds over, and 40 percent for fighters who missed by more than that, known to be the steepest in the industry. (All of those penalties were then handed over to the opponent who did make the weight.)

If Cage Warriors didn’t strike some fear into the hearts of its athletes by announcing the 60 percent penalty, well, perhaps nothing will.

Of course, in the States, fines for missing weight are set by individual state athletic commissions. But MMAjunkie asked fighters Stateside what they thought of such a severe fine for fighters who miss the mark, and we got some varied answers.

Check out the full video above with comments from the likes of Justin Buccholz, T.J. Dillashaw, Joseph Benavidez, Alexis Davis and Chad Mendes. Then weigh in – ahem; pun intended – on what you think the penalty should be.
