Video: Dana White, Craig Piligian-produced ‘The Fighters’ debuts in January

With plenty of success for “The Ultimate Fighter” under their belts, Dana White and Craig Piligian next month team up to tackle another combat sport: boxing.

Piligian, whose Pilgrim Studios has produced “The Ultimate Fighter,” and UFC president White have a new reality series on the horizon. “The Fighters” premiers next month on Discovery Channel and goes inside the world of amateur boxing in South Boston.

“The Fighters,” which will be an eight-part series, debuts Thursday, Jan. 23, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel. In the series, amateur boxers from rival gyms in Boston’s “Southie” neighborhood will be chosen to train for a week before fighting, with a chance to stay in the spotlight heading toward a pro boxing career.

Former boxer and current gym owner and trainer Peter Welch will be charged with getting the city’s best trainers to bring up-and-coming fighters along with the hope of reviving boxing in Boston.

“Boxing has always been my favorite sport and it led me to where I am today,” White stated. “I’m excited to share this project with viewers and give them an opportunity to take a look into the unique world of boxing in South Boston, and to see up-and-coming talent in the sport.”

According to an official release about the show, each episode “documents the daily struggles, personal relationships and epic training sessions as the fighters prepare for the fight of their lives – where only one will overcome the odds and emerge victorious. Every week, these three rounds will help decide not only their fates, but also the fate of boxing in Southie.”

“With ‘The Fighters,’ we really wanted to get back to the roots of boxing in Southie, where the sport is so integral to the culture,” Piligian stated. “These fighters put everything on the line, and I believe this show will breathe new life into boxing.”
