Video: Anthony Pettis analyzes Sergio's win at UFC Fight Night 42

The last time Anthony Pettis had to rebound from a loss, he did so with a split-decision win over Jeremy Stephens – and took a bit of criticism for it.

So the UFC’s lightweight champion knows a thing or two about what some would call playing it safe to make sure he got back in the win column.

Since then, though, Pettis has three first-round stoppage wins and three bonuses with finishes of Joe Lauzon, Donald Cerrone and Benson Henderson, the latter of which got him his title.

On Saturday, Pettis’ younger brother Sergio Pettis (11-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) admittedly played it a little safe to get a win over Yaotzin Meza (20-10 MMA, 1-3 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 42 in Albuquerque, N.M. The younger Pettis, a bantamweight, needed a win after the first loss of his career, which came in January.

Anthony Pettis, who cornered Sergio, said his brother can be forgiven – and that this could set in motion the same kind of impressive wins he’s had since his rebound win over Stephens.

“I thought he did what he had to do to win,” Anthony Pettis said. “Coming off a loss, it’s all about gaining confidence and getting your momentum back. So that’s what that fight was. He did some amazing things – he tried a cartwheel kick, a spinning back kick.

“… For him, it’s just getting his confidence back. He’s back in the win column, and it’s just running them off after that.”
