UFC targeting Tyron Woodley vs. Hector Lombard, pending Woodley's approval

UFC President Dana White said a potential welterweight fight between Tyron Woodley (14-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and Hector Lombard (34-4-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) is a go – if Woodley agrees.

White today told UFC.com that the promotion is targeting the matchup on a date to be determined. While Lombard has agreed, he said, Woodley, who knocked out Dong Hyun Kim this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 48, is still a question mark.

“What’s weird about that is that Woodley calls out Matt Brown, but he’s ranked higher than Matt Brown,” White said. “But we want to do Tyron Woodley vs. Hector Lombard – that’s the fight we want to do.

“Hector said yes, we’re just waiting to hear from Woodley. Lombard said he would fight him, no problem.”

MMAjunkie was unable to reach Woodley for comment. Recently, the 32-year-old fighter expressed interest in a bout with Brown, who in July lost a title eliminator bout against Robbie Lawler at UFC on FOX 12.

Woodley previously told MMAjunkie Radio that he wanted to fight Brown as the co-main event of a planned rematch between champ Johny Hendricks and Lawler.

“It’s one of the best fights in the division just because the dude won’t go away,” Woodley said of Brown. “He’s like a freakin’ zombie. So if you guys want to see that, make your voices heard on social media.”

As White noted, however, Woodley is higher than Brown on the UFC’s official rankings, which are decided by a pool of media voters, and USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA welterweight rankings, which have Woodley at No. 4 and Brown at No. 6.

Still, with a win over Kim this past weekend at UFC Fight Night 48 in Macau, Woodley revived his push for the welterweight belt after a lackluster decision loss to Rory MacDonald at UFC 174. Prior to that, he called for a shot at the title after a TKO victory over former interim titleholder Carlos Condit in March at UFC 171. Condit injured his knee in the second round and was unable to continue.

Lombard originally was scheduled to fight Kim, but was forced to withdraw due to a neck injury.
