The Ultimate Fighting Championship handed out $50,000 performance bonuses following UFC on FOX 7 in San Jose, Calif., on Saturday night. Matt Brown, Jordan Mein, Josh Thomson and Yoel Romero banked the bonus money.
Welterweights Matt Brown and Jordan Mein were awarded Fight of the Night honors for their back-and-forth battle that kicked off the main card portion of the event on Fox.
Mein hurt Brown with a shot to the body in the opening round and looked to be close to finishing at one point. Brown recovered and went on the offensive. He swarmed Mein in the second round, landing punches and knees, finishing with strikes in a comeback win.
There were two Knockout of the Night winners following UFC on FOX 7. Former Strikeforce lightweight titleholder Josh Thomson returned to the UFC following a nine-year absence, and did so in impressive fashion. He used his speed and footwork to pick Nate Diaz apart from the outside. He unleashed a high kick that landed cleanly in the second round. The kick staggered Diaz and Thomson finished with a series of punches on the ground.
The other Knockout of the Night bonus recipient was Yoel Romero in his UFC debut. Romero landed a perfectly timed flying knee that rocked his opponent, Clifford Starks, in the opening round of their preliminary bout. Starks crumbled to the canvas and Romero sealed the deal with right hands.
There was no Submission of the Night bonus because there wasn’t a submission finish on the UFC on FOX 7 card. $200,000 in total bonus money was paid out.
