UFC on FOX 22's Eddie Wineland wants off UFC Fight Pass so he can avoid Best Buy

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Among UFC bantamweight Eddie Wineland’s first words backstage to UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby were “no more Fight Pass,” with an expletive thrown in for good measure.

It was all in good fun for the former WEC bantamweight champ, though, after he picked up his second straight knockout win in a fight against Takeya Mizugaki at UFC on FOX 22, which took place Saturday at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Calif. Of course, it streamed live on the promotion’s online network.

Wineland explained his request wasn’t a complaint aimed at better career opportunities. He’s just didn’t want to make a trip to Best Buy.

“It’s really not a big deal,” Wineland (23-11-1 MMA, 5-5 UFC) told MMAjunkie after stopping Mizugaki (21-11-2 MMA, 8-6 UFC) in the first round. “Well, yes and no. I don’t know if they’re trying to sell Fight Pass – I was just concerned with my family being able to watch.

“I didn’t have a Fight Pass (account) set up. I had to deal with getting a Fight Pass set up and getting a cable so they could hook the computer to the TV and yada yada yada. But, needless to say, my family got to watch, so all is well.”

Wineland wants his family to take part in his experience as he fights back into contention after contemplating retirement. He got back on the horse and turned things around with a stoppage of Frankie Saenz in July.

First on his list after Saturday’s win, Wineland wanted to call his 2-year-old son on FaceTime. Because some technology is good.

“He told me, ‘Daddy’s going to beat him,’ so yeah, daddy beat him,” Wineland said. “This is huge. Mizugaki, he’s a veteran like myself. We’ve both been around the block a few times. This was a good fight.

“The reason I keep fighting is because of my boys. I’ve had my jaw broken twice. I was ready to hang them up. And we had my first son, Jack, and I just got the itch again. You’ve got to prove to your boy that you can get up, keep moving forward, that you don’t quit because you get knocked down. It’s relit a fire.”
