UFC on FOX 11 results, photos: Dustin Ortiz takes split call from gritty Ray Borg

ORLANDO – Ray Borg and Dustin Ortiz used almost every inch of the Octagon over the course of their spirited three-round affair, and when the dust had finally cleared two of the three judges saw it as a split-decision win for Ortiz (28-29, 29-28, 29-29), who just narrowly survived a tough second round to claim the victory.

The flyweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC on FOX 11 event at Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass ahead of additional prelims on FOX Sports 1 and a main card on FOX.

Borg and Ortiz did their best to put on a show in this 125-pound prelim. After trading takedowns and top control in the first, Borg captured the first significant advantage of the fight in round two, when he took Ortiz’s back with a body triangle and came close to locking up several submission attempts. Ortiz made it to the end of the round, however, and then came out strong in the third, mixing up his punches and kicks to keep Borg on the defensive.

That proved to be enough for two of the three judges, who handed Ortiz the win. Borg, meanwhile, will have to settle for a strong performance in a losing effort for his UFC debut.

“As soon as the round started, the game plan went out the window and my natural instincts took over,” Ortiz said. “He took my back faster than anyone I’ve ever seen and he’s very strong. He was able to take me down a few times, but he never did any damage. I controlled the fight and definitely feel that I did enough to win.”

Ortiz (13-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) gets back in the win column after a split decision loss to John Moraga in January. Borg (6-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) suffers the first defeat of his pro career.
