CHICAGO – It took two rounds for Ramiro Hernandez to find the strategy to defeat Hugo Viana – and that was a little too late.
Viana’s early lead, which was cemented as much by his activity as Hernandez’s inability to let loose, put him ahead on judges’ scorecards despite a shaky final round. The Brazillian earned unanimous scores of 29-28.
The bantamweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC on FOX 10 event at United Center in Chicago. It aired on FOX Sports 1 after an additional prelim on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of the main card on FOX.
Viana, a veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil,” scored early with heavy hooks, which made Hernandez tentative to exchange. Through two rounds, he dictated the pace of the fight, issuing sharp counters and aggressive flurries as Hernandez offered little more than a target.
Hernandez’s corner, former UFC welterweight champ Pat Miletich, advised him to crowd the Brazilian and look for combinations inside. But only in the third round did Hernandez employ the strategy, and by then, Viana was well aware of his lead on scorecards.
In the final round, Hernandez walked down a retreating Viana and attempted to instigate a firefight. Viana took more punches than in previous rounds and once appeared hurt, but he was able to retreat.
At one point, Hernandez mocked Viana’s movement, imitating a running man. But he was unable to land the kind of punches that might erase the deficit in points.
Viana (8-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) gets back on the winning track after a first-round TKO loss to T.J. Dillashaw that handed him his first octagon loss since the reality show. Hernandez (13-6 MMA, 0-2 UFC) remains winless in the UFC after a first-round submission loss to Lucas Martins in his debut at UFC Fight Night 28.
