Jon Jones has long discussed a potential move to heavyweight. If and when the former light-heavyweight champion makes a return to the cage, UFC champ Fabricio Werdum wants him to make the jump for a “super fight.”
Jones has largely disappeared from the MMA radar following his alleged involvement in an April hit-and-run that left a pregnant woman with a broken arm.
The former longtime champ was stripped of the title, which he held for more than four years, and suspended indefinitely from the UFC roster following his arrest. Daniel Cormier went on to win the vacant 205-pound belt after defeating Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 this past month.
The 27-year-old’s potential future in the sport remains unclear, and those around him have offered a variety of predictions.
When Jones (21-1 MMA, 15-1 UFC) last fought, Cain Velasquez was still the UFC heavyweight champion. Times have changed, however; Werdum (20-5-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) knocked Velasquez off his throne at UFC 188 earlier this month.
Werdum was a significant underdog, but as he’s done before, the Brazilian shocked the world and pulled off the upset – just like he did against Fedor Emelianenko, Travis Browne and other heavyweight notables.
Although Werdum has a growing line of challengers – from Andrei Arlovski to Junior Dos Santos to Stipe Miocic to a second fight with Velasquez – he seems to have a growing interest in a matchup with Jones, as he revealed on Twitter:
It’s a compelling matchup on paper between the current heavyweight champ and the No. 1 fighter in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA pound-for-pound rankings. Unfortunately, Jones has legal issues to resolve before the fantasy bout can move toward reality.
