UFC Champions Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre On Target for October Returns to the Octagon

Jon Jones and Georges St-PierreUFC champions Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre could both be back in the Octagon as soon as October of this year.

Coincidence? Yes, it is a coincidence.

Even if both fighters return to action in October, it won’t be against each other. They’re both part of the Anderson Silva “superfight” talk that is all the rage of late, but are not under consideration as opponents for each other.

Jones is fresh off of a headline victory over Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 in April. Unfortunately for the champ, he suffered a severe dislocation of his toe that is going to take some time to heal.

Jones had been hoping to return to the Octagon by late summer, but those plans appear to be derailed.

It now looks as if he is targeting an October date. A UFC Tonight report on Tuesday night, citing unnamed sources, indicated that Jones’ doctor urged him to slow down his training or his toe might take even longer to heal.

While Jones’ return is dependent upon his recovery, St-Pierre is more of a sure bet for October.

He last fought in March, defending his belt against Nick Diaz at UFC 158.

UFC president Dana White recently told Sportsnet that the champion would next defend his belt against No. 1 contender Johny Hendricks, and said that October was his anticipated timeframe for the bout.

UFC Tonight also reported that St-Pierre, according to another unnamed source, is hoping for an October fight with Hendricks.

(Editor’s Note: This article originally contained an error. It has since been corrected to reflect Johny Hendricks as the next opponent for Georges St-Pierre.)
