UFC 204 winner Marc Diakiese says he'll be a big UFC name 'soon – very soon'

MANCHESTER, England –  Marc Diakiese’s UFC debut started on a sour note when Lukasz Sajewski scored a takedown and neutralized his explosive striking game.

Diakiese (10-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) got his game going in the second round, however, and scored a TKO win over Sajewski (13-3 MMA, 0-3 UFC) after battering him against the cage.

The lightweight bout was part of UFC 204’s preliminary card at Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. It aired on FS1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of the main card on pay-per-view.

The early takedown was a worst-case scenario for Diakiese, who has battled criticism of his ground game during his rise as a prospect. Following his victory, he said he was able to prove he’s capable of surviving on the mat.

“There was no frustration,” Diakiese said. “People say my ground game is terrible, but I’m always standing and not on the ground. Today I think I showed (my ground game). I started attacking and going for his legs. But it is what it is. I’m looking improve all the time.”

As an undefeated British fighter, Diakiese could be a marketable fighter for the UFC. Sometimes that means a slow build to allow a fighter to develop in the octagon and pick up solid wins.

The 23-year-old said his goal is simply to move toward a shot at the championship.

“(I want to return) as soon as possible – as soon as possible,” Diakiese said. “Whatever UFC is willing to give me (is fine). I’m not here to make up numbers. I’m going to start working toward that world title. I’m going to keep working.

“… I’m 23, and I’m still learning daily. I’ve got a lot to learn. I believe I’m going to be up there soon – very soon.”
