UFC 194 results: Warlley Alves blasts through Colby Covington with first-round choke

LAS VEGAS – Warlley Alves didn’t need long to turn Colby Covington’s takedown-minded attack against him.

With Covington (8-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) pressing the clinch and looking to put Alves (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) on the mat, the Brazilian latched onto a guillotine and jumped into guard, holding on even as Covington tried to slam his way out and eventually forcing the tap at the 1:26 mark of Round 1.

The welterweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC 194 event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view.

It was Covington’s rush to get the fight to the floor that provided Alves with all the opportunity he needed to finish it. Covington wasted little time exchanging from distance before bulling his way into the clinch, pressing Alves against the fence and looking for the takedown.

But when Covington grew careless about protecting his neck, Alves snatched him in a guillotine and then immediately dropped to guard to finish it. Convington responded by lifting him high off the mat, then slamming him down hard on his back. This proved no help in loosening the choke, however, and soon Covington had to submit.

Alves maintains his perfect record as a professional, winning his fourth straight fight since coming to the UFC. Covington’s loss is the first of his pro career.
