After Lucas Martins’ original opponent, Bryan Caraway, had to withdraw from their UFC 170 bout, the Brazilian has now had to withdraw from the fight card due to injury.
UFC officials announced Martins’ withdrawal on Tuesday.
That briefly left Caraway’s replacement, UFC debutant Aljamain Sterling, without an opponent. The promotion moved swiftly, however, and signed Cody Gibson, another UFC newbie, to keep the bout on the card.
Sterling (8-0) is undefeated and trains out of the Serra-Longo Fight Team alongside middleweight champion Chris Weidman. He’s won his last three fights via rear naked choke.
Gibson (11-3) is on a six-fight winning streak. He is coming off a victory at the November Tachi Palace Fights, which has launched several fighters into the Octagon.
Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey headlines the UFC 170 fight card on Feb. 22 in Las Vegas. She will put her belt on the line against fellow former Olympian Sara McMann.
