NEWARK, N.J. – Alan Patrick wasn’t able to get John Makdessi to the mat despite several attempts, but he did enough on the feet to convince the judges, earning a unanimous decision victory (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) in a plodding three-round affair.
The lightweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC 169 event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view.
It wasn’t exactly a thriller, and certainly Makdessi seemed shocked at the decision. Patrick appeared to struggle while attempting to get his offense going, falling short with telegraphed strikes while Makdessi countered effectively with short punches. Still, the judges all agreed that Patrick deserved the nod, and the Brazilian did not appear to disagree.
“I faced a great opponent who tried to tie me up all the time,” Patrick said. “My plan was to keep fighting him and I did it. Makdessi was desperate after the first round, so that’s the reason I could take him down every time when I wanted.”
Makdessi (12-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) drops his first fight since April of 2012, snapping a three-fight winning streak. Patrick (12-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) remains unbeaten with the win.
