UFC 146 Adjustments Continue; Roy Nelson Now to Face Gabriel Gonzaga on May 26 Card

UFC 146 has its third revision in four days, as UFC President Dana White announced via Twitter on Monday that Gabriel Gonzaga will now take on Roy Nelson on the May 26 card.

Nelson was left without an opponent when Antonio Silva was tabbed to take Frank Mir’s place against Cain Velasquez in the evening’s co-main event. Gonzaga was originally scheduled to square off with former Strikeforce talent Shane del Rosario in another main card tilt. No replacement opponent has been announced for Del Rosario at this time.

Taking place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, UFC 146 is headlined by a heavyweight title bout between Mir and reigning champion Junior dos Santos. The main card is also expected to include a heavyweight clash between Mark Hunt and Stefan Struve.

A veteran of the International Fight League, Nelson has lost three of his last four fights. “Big Country” last appeared at UFC 143, where he fell to Fabricio Werdum via unanimous decision. “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 10 winner owns notable victories against Struve, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Brendan Schaub during his Octagon tenure.

After more than a year hiatus from the Las Vegas-based promotion, Gonzaga returned to the UFC in January, earning a first-round submission triumph over Ednaldo Oliveira in Rio de Janeiro. A onetime heavyweight title challenger, Gonzaga began his UFC career in 2005 and reeled off four straight victories, most notably a head-kick knockout of Filipovic at UFC 70.
