Weidman and Stout score first round finishes at UFC 131.

Chris Weidman remains undefeated after a first round submission win over Jesse Bongfeldt at UFC 131 on Saturday.

The two-time NCAA All-American wrestler utilized his grappling ability to put Bongfeldt on his back early in bout. Bongfeldt eventually worked his way back to his feet, but left his head out on a single-leg takedown attempt. The Serra-Longo trained Weidman quickly applied a standing guillotine choke forcing Bongfeldt to tap out.

Following the fight Weidman revealed that he aggravated his meniscus during the bout, a pre-existing knee injury.

“My meniscus actually popped,” said Weidman. “I’ve actually had four knee surgeries, so it’s a pre-existing (injury).

Advancing his record to 6-0 (2-0 in the UFC), Weidman emerges as one of the top prospects in the middleweight division.

Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout lived up to his nickname with a highlight reel knockout over Yves Edwards in lightweight action.

Stylistically, the match up promised fireworks and delivered. The two strikers carefully worked their craft through the first 90 seconds of the round before Edwards secured a takedown.

Stout was able to get back to his feet before long and delivered a left hook that put Edwards unconscious before he hit the canvas. As his limp body crashed down, his head bounced off the Octagon mat with his eyes left wide open.

Stout immediately realized Edwards was out and raised his hands in triumph.

During the exchanged, right before landing the left hook, Stout was hit with a right hand but his chin stood the test from Edwards.

“It takes more than that to stop me, Joe,” said Stout in his post-fight interview. “That overhand left always works great for me against left handers. Yves Edwards is a precision striker, I knew I was going to have to rely on my chin a little bit. I was trying to work my head movement as much as I could during this training camp, I’m trying not to get hit as much. It worked out for me tonight.”

The knockout win puts Stout on a two-fight win streak.
