UFC's Daniel Cormier said he could decide on future weight class this week

daniel-cormier-25.jpgDaniel Cormier‘s decision to either stay at heavyweight or make the move down to light heavyweight could come as soon as this week.

Cormier (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), a former Strikeforce fighter, made a successful UFC debut this past weekend with a win over ex-heavyweight champ Frank Mir (16-7 MMA, 14-7 UFC) at UFC on FOX 7. But even before the co-main-event win, Cormier talked about a potential move down to 205 pounds.

While a guest host on FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight” on Tuesday, Cormier suggested the decision could come soon. As he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) after the win, he plans to meet with UFC executives and his management team to make a group decision. Now the meeting could come soon.

“I have a call into the boss on Thursday, and we’ll see what happens,” he said on Tuesday.

Cormier, who suffered a near-tragic weight cut during his Olympic wrestling days, admits he’s still not sure what he prefers. However, he sees attractive options in both weight classes, though a move down to light heavyweight likely wouldn’t be completed until late 2013.

“Big fights – big fights are what I’m interested in,” he said. “Whether it be at heavyweight or whether it be at 205, it doesn’t matter. I’m going to get with my team this week, and we’re going to make a decision.”

Cormier’s primary training partner, Cain Velasquez, currently holds the UFC’s heavyweight title. Velasquez fights Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva next month at UFC 160, and that could contribute to Cormier’s decision.

If Cormier does make the plunge, he said he doesn’t necessarily want an immediate light-heavyweight title shot and instead would like to face a fellow contender first.
