Top Ten Women's Mixed Martial Arts Personalities to Follow on Twitter: A Fan's View (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

By Eric Holden,

According to a Yahoo! Sports report, Gina Carano hasn't closed the door on her acting career despite the dismal box office earnings from her big-screen debut in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire.

"Whatever happens happens. I'd be stupid to say I wouldn't (act) again because I'd do it again a million times over," Carano told MMAWeekly.com, leaving her future, both in movies and fighting, wide open.

"I've already done so much now. I've added this movie to my life and I've had such a wonderful time in mixed martial arts. I'm not trying to be greedy and snatch up all the dreams, but I'm just gonna keep going forward and see what happens."

Carano (@ginacarano) is clearly the most popular women's MMA fighter on Twitter, as she has racked up over 73,000 followers since joining a short while back.

Here's a look at the rest of the top ten women's MMA personalities to follow on Twitter:

2) Ronda Rousey

"Rowdy" Ronda Rousey is rapidly closing on in Carano's reign as the face of women's MMA, and some would say she has already taken that mantle.

Rousey, a former Olympic medalist in Judo, has taken the MMA world by storm with her dazzling armbar submissions, good looks and brash personality.

She submitted Miesha Tate in March for her eighth straight win, including five professional bouts and three at the amateur level.

Rousey is the current Strikeforce 135-pound champ. On March 19, she tweeted "Back to training…. Life is good :)." Follow her on Twitter @rondarousey.

3) Miesha Tate

Tate is one of the pioneers of social media use in women's MMA. She has effectively used Twitter to gain sponsorships, promote awareness of the sport and get her name into the mainstream.

She is one of the most active tweeters in the sport, as she has posted over 15,000 tweets in a two-year span.

On March 17, she tweeted "Just left Miami & headed for our Oasis of the Seas Cruise, never been on a cruise I'm SO stoked! Jamaica, Haiti & Cozumel here we come!" Luckily, Miesha is enjoying some vacation time before she gets ready for her next fight. Follow Tate on Twitter @mieshatate.

4) Sarah Kaufman

Kaufman is making a name for herself with MMA fans for her unflappable willingness to scrap and trade punches to put on an exciting show.

Her three-round decision victory over Alexis Davis in a standup slugfest in March earned her a title shot against Ronda Rousey, in a match that will undoubtedly take place before the end of 2012. Follow Kaufman on Twitter @mmasarah.

5) Kaitlin Young

I'm excited about Kaitlin Young's resurgence in the sport.

Young suffered five losses between 2008 and early 2011 before finding her range with back-to-back TKO victories over Lizbeth Carreiro and Anna Barone.

She is slated to fight Leslie Smith at the inaugural Invicta Fighting Championships event on April 28 in Kansas City, KS. Follow Young on Twitter @kaitlin_young.

6) Shannon Knapp

Knapp is one of the most influential females in the sport of women's mixed martial arts.

After spending over a decade in the industry, serving various roles from broadcaster to fight matchmaker, she is revolutionizing the sport with the introduction of the Invicta Fighting Championships, the first MMA promotion to feature female-only fight cards.

Every fight fan knows who Dana White is. Pretty soon, Knapp may be a household name as well.

Follow Knapp on Twitter @shanknapp and stay updated with the Invicta Fighting Championships by following @invictafights.

7) Marloes Coenen

Coenen is the former Strikeforce women's bantamweight champ and she's one of the top advocates for the sport.

On March 19, she tweeted "For my US-followers: smart of you to not import hooliganism into the New World. Soccer game in Greece turned into a riot. Happends all the Time here in EU. But it was only watched by supporters of 1 club..+ thousands of police men."

Follow Coenen on Twitter @marloescoenen.

8) Alexis Davis

Davis is one of my favorite fighters because she always puts on entertaining standup wars. Win or lose, Davis comes out swinging and never stops.

On March 18, she tweeted "I hope everyone had a great st. patties day!! Life is an adventure, you never know where it's going to take you!" Follow Davis on Twitter @alexisdavismma.

9) Liz Carmouche

Carmouche is a veteran fighter who will be appearing on the Invicta Fighting Championships card on April 28 against Ashleigh Curry.

On March 4, she used Twitter to show some love to Ronda Rousey by tweeting "@RondaRousey proves to everyone that she should be champion. I'm very excited to see her take on rightful contender @mmasarah."

Follow Carmouche on Twitter @iamgirlrilla.

10) Cris "Cyborg" Santos

Cyborg is currently serving a yearlong suspension for a positive steroid test in January, but she still deserves a spot on this list because she's one of the most popular athletes in the sport.

On March 19, she tweeted "Today I belong to a team of athletes BMa ADIDAS! Thank you for the support I am very happy to be working together! God and wonderful." Follow Santos on Twitter @criscyborg.
