A bantamweight bout between Takeya Mizugaki (18-7-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and Nam Phan (18-11 MMA, 2-4 UFC) is official for December’s UFC Fight Night 33 event in Australia.
UFC officials today announced the bout.
UFC Fight Night 33 takes place Dec. 7 in the Queensland capital at Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
Broadcast plans haven’t been announced, but the event is expected to air on FOX Sports 1 or FOX Sports 2 following prelims on Facebook. Due to the time difference, the event takes place Saturday, Dec. 7, in Australia (but Friday, Dec. 6, in the U.S.).
Mizugaki, who’s ranked No. 15 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com MMA bantamweight rankings, looks for his fourth consecutive UFC win. The Japanese vet and former WEC title challenger is on a run, but only barely. His past two wins, over Bryan Caraway and Erik Perez, both came via split decision.
He’ll look for his first stoppage victory in more than two years when he fights Pham, who’s a peculiar choice of opponent for Mizugaki. Likely to be a substantial underdog in the bout, Pham, who had been competing at featherweight, is just 2-4 in the UFC since his stint on “The Ultimate Fighter 12.” Most recently, he suffered a decision loss to Dennis Siver at UFC on FOX 5.
