Strikeforce Results: Underdog No More – Chad Griggs Blasts Overeem Into Submission

When Chad Griggs fought Bobby Lashley in his Strikeforce debut, he was an unknown and an underdog. After Saturday night, consider Griggs an underdog no more.

The Arizona firefighter absolutely overwhelmed Valentijn Overeem with strikes, causing the older brother of Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem to tap out early in the first round.

After initiating a clinch to open the fight as Overeem looked for a takedown, it was Griggs who reversed and threw his opponent to the mat.

From the bottom, Overeem worked for a keylock, but left his head open to strikes from the ultra aggressive Griggs who was unrelenting with punches.

Once Overeem felt the brunt of his power, he let go of the arm to defend his head, but that ended up being the biggest mistake of all.

The opening put Griggs in control and he unleashed a barrage of strikes, pummeling Overeem in the face and head. The Dutchman rolled over to try and avoid the power, but instead caught more punches flush to the face.

With Griggs continuing the unrelenting assault, Overeem tapped the canvas to signal he had enough.

The win moves Griggs to 3-0 since coming to Strikeforce, and as of now the prime candidate should a replacement be needed for the Heavyweight Grand Prix.
