Stephan Bonnar Handed One-Year Suspension; Dave Herman Suspension Still Undetermined

Stephan Bonnar at UFC 116Ultimate Fighting Championship officials on Tuesday handed down Stephan Bonnar’s suspension for testing positive for the steroid Drostanolone following his bout with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva on Oct. 13 at UFC 153.

Bonnar, following the positive drug test, has been suspended for one year. Prior to the positive result, Bonnar, however, indicated that he would be retiring from the sport.

Since Brazil does not have a sanctioning body to oversee mixed martial arts, the UFC policed itself at UFC 153, hiring a third party company to administer drug testing. UFC 153 was held at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

The test result and suspension are reported by the UFC to the Association of Boxing Commissions, UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner told MMAWeekly.com. The ABC keeps a database of such suspensions so that athletic commissions across the country can track suspended fighters and keep them from competing in their jurisdiction.

Dave Herman, who also competed at UFC 153, tested positive for marijuana. Herman’s suspension has yet to be determined, but Ratner indicated that it would be determined by the end of the week.
