Scott Jorgensen on Zach Makovsky: ‘Nothing I haven’t seen before’

SACRAMENTO – At this point, Scott Jorgensen doesn’t care who’s staring across the cage at him at Saturday’s UFC on FOX 9 event. A former Bellator MMA and RFA champ? Jorgensen isn’t exactly impressed.

Jorgensen (14-7 MMA, 3-3 UFC) makes his flyweight debut against promotional newcomer Zach Makovsky (16-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on the FOX Sports 1-televised preliminary card, which precedes the network-televised UFC on FOX 9 main card at Sacramento’s Sleep Train Arena. Jorgensen, who’s logged 16 fights with the UFC and WEC over the past six years, has faced a host of notables during that time, including Urijah Faber, Eddie Wineland, Renan Barao, Dominick Cruz, Brad Pickett and Takeya Mizugaki.

So when it comes to Makovsky, who claimed the RFA flyweight title in a five-rounder just three weeks ago, Jorgensen simply shrugs his shoulders.

“Nothing I haven’t seen before,” he told MMAjunkie. “I fight killers. Look at my last four or five fights. They were No. 1 and No. 2 in the world. Not in Bellator, not in anywhere else. In the world.

“They’re either former champs or they’ve been title contenders. They fought for the belt in their last fight or right after they fought me.”

That’s obviously a knock at Makovsky’s former home, where he went 6-2 before Bellator cut the ex-champ after back-to-back losses in 2012. Makovsky, who’s just outside the top 15 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA flyweight rankings, could make a big splash with a win over Jorgensen, who’s ranked No. 8 at bantamweight (before a move to the flyweight rankings after Saturday’s fight).

If Jorgensen seems a bit confident that he’ll derail his opponent’s upset plans, he’s got a few reasons. In addition to past experience against the sport’s elite fighters, he said he’s had a remarkably easy time shedding weight for his 125-pound debut. Besides, he said, after losing would-be opponents Ian McCall and John Dodson to injuries, he’s just happy to have a fight on Saturday, regardless of the opponent.

“I’ve fought killers,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what our who Zach is. My opponent has been switched so many times. This time it’s just a fight. You can stick whoever you want in there.”
