Quinn Mulhern drops to lightweight, faces Ryan Couture at UFC 164

Former King of the Cage welterweight champion Quinn Mulhern (18-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is dropping to lightweight, and he’ll meet fellow Strikeforce vet Ryan Couture (6-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 164.

UFC officials today announced the new contest.

Featuring a lightweight title fight between current champion Benson Henderson and top contender T.J. Grant, UFC 164 takes place Aug. 31 at Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

The evening’s main card airs on pay-per-view. Couture vs. Mulhern is expected to be part of the prelims, which air on FOX Sports 1 and stream on Facebook.

Both Couture and Mulhern seek their first UFC win. Couture made his promotional debut at April’s UFC on FUEL TV 9 event in Sweden, where The Ultimate Fighter 9? winner Ross Pearson outstruck and defeated him via second-round TKO. The result snapped a four-fight win streak for Couture, who previously had fought his professional career exclusively under the Strikeforce.

Meanwhile, Mulhern made his UFC debut against Rick Story in March at UFC 158. Things didn’t go well for the 28-year-old New Mexican, who was handed a first-round TKO loss. The result snapped a three-fight winning streak he had built under the Strikeforce banner.

With the addition to the card, the full UFC 164 lineup includes:
