Quinn Mulhern Drops to Lightweight, Meets Ryan Couture at UFC 164

Former King of the Cage welterweight champion Quinn Mulhern will make the cut to 155 pounds when he faces Ryan Couture on Aug. 31 at UFC 164.

The event takes place at BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee and is headlined by a lightweight title showdown between champion Benson Henderson and challenger T.J. Grant. The pay-per-view will also see Josh Barnett make his UFC return, as “The Warmaster” collides with fellow former heavyweight champion Frank Mir.

Mulhern, 28, began his career 15-1, capturing the KOTC welterweight crown before falling to Jason High in his 2011 Strikeforce debut. The New Mexican responded by posting three straight victories, besting Danny Davis Jr., David Hulett and Yuri Villefort before coming up short in his Octagon debut, suffering a first-round knockout to Rick Story at UFC 158.

Couture also enters the Octagon coming off a loss, as the grappler was knocked out by Ross Pearson this past April at UFC on Fuel TV 9. The defeat snapped a four-fight winning streak for the second-generation mixed martial artist, who finished his Strikeforce career with a hard-fought split decision victory over K.J. Noons on Jan. 12.
