“The Ultimate Fighter 5? runner-up Manny Gamburyan (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will take on Jeff Cox (9-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at an already-stacked UFC Fight Night 13 event.
The bout had been rumored for the past few days, and the Wrestling Observer reported yesterday that UFC executives officially acknowledged the fight. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) received confirmation of the bout from Cox’s camp overnight.
UFC Fight Night 13 takes place April 2 at the Broomfield Event Center near Denver, Colo., where Kenny Florian meets Joe Lauzon in the night’s main event. As MMAjunkie.com recently reported, Spike TV recently opted to make the event a three-hour broadcast, which will precede the debut episode of “The Ultimate Fighter 7.”
With the Gamburyan vs. Cox fight, the UFC Fight Night 13 card now boasts a total of 12 bouts.
Gamburyan, the spunky submission specialist who cruised into “The Ultimate Fighter 5? finals, lost to eventual champion Nate Diaz in the show’s live finale. Although he won the first round, Gamburyan suffered a shoulder injury early in the second round, which forced the stoppage. Gamburyan, though, bounced back for a quick and decisive first-round submission of Nate Mohr in December at UFC 79.
Gamburyan, a cousin of UFC welterweight contender Karo Parisyan, will now take on Cox, a King of the Cage veteran who earned a ticket into the UFC last year. He debuted at UFC Fight Night 10 and suffered a first-round submission to surging welterweight Gleison Tibau. Cox then briefly left the organization to defeat Joe Cronin (8-8) via third-round knockout at a December IFO show.
