LONDON – Makwan Amirkhani had to work a little bit on Saturday night. He hadn’t been used to that thus far in his UFC career.
In his first two fights in the promotion, Amirkhani had an eight-second knockout of Any Ogle and a submission in 101 seconds against Masio Fullen. At UFC Fight Night 84, Amirkhani (13-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) went the distance against Mike Wilkinson (9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and picked up a unanimous decision – just the third time he’s gone to the judges for a win in his career.
Amirkhani beat Wilkinson in a featherweight fight on the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night 84 at The O2 in London. The card streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
The win was part of a bit of a transformation for the Iran-born fighter from Finland, who has been training at the esteemed SBG Ireland team in Dublin – the camp that produced UFC featherweight champion and current megastar Conor McGregor.
“Everybody in the featherweight (division) should be scared,” Amirkhani said of his perceived improvement training with SBG. “When I step into the SBG, when I spend more time there, I’ll be a really dangerous fighter after this when I go there.”
Thus far, “Mr. Finland” only has fought in Europe. But at 3-0 in the UFC, he’s starting to turn some heads.
The whole fighting in Europe thing may be changing, and soon.
“(Friday) after the weigh-in, when we came back, I was with (UFC matchmaker) Sean Shelby on the bus, and he said, ‘I really need to introduce you to the U.S.,'” Amirkhani said. “I said, ‘Let me finish this fight first.'”
Well, that’s out of the way now. The chances are good Shelby will be calling soon – and likely for a fight of increasing importance.
