Kelvin Gastelum vs. Vitor Belfort slated for UFC Fight Night 107 in Brazil

After a big win at UFC 206, Kelvin Gastelum is getting his wish.

Following a series of weight-cutting gaffes at welterweight, Gastelum (13-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) was forced to middleweight, where he scored a third-round TKO victory over Tim Kennedy (18-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in a pay-per-view main-card bout at this past Saturday’s UFC 206 event in Toronto.

After the performance, Gastelum said he welcomed a fight with Belfort (25-13 MMA, 14-9 UFC) at 185 pounds. Now, he’s got it.

The fight is slate for UFC Fight Night 107, which takes place March 11 in Brazil. Other event details haven’t been confirmed, though the card is expected to air on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

UFC officials today announced the bout. Globo.com first reported it, and Belfort also seemed to suggest it was a done deal on Tuesday (via Twitter):

Belfort is No. 10 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA middleweight rankings, and Gastelum is No. 14.

Gastelum defeated former welterweight champ Johny Hendricks in his previous bout, and with the Kennedy win, “The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner is now 3-1 over his past four fights. The defeat during that stretch came via split decision to Neil Magny (most media outlets score it a draw, according to MMADecisions.com). The 25-year-old’s only other career loss came to current champ Tyron Woodley.

Gastelum now fights an opponent 14 years his elder in Belfort, who fought off retirement rumors following his October TKO loss to Gegard Mousasi. The MMA legend and former UFC light-heavyweight champion is now stuck in a 1-3 skid (with three knockout losses), which included a 2015 title defeat to then-champ Chris Weidman.

Additional UFC Fight Night 107 bouts will be announced in the coming weeks.
