Ian McCall on the Flyweight Division: “I Know I’m No. 1 And Everyone Else Is Going to Know That Soon”

If you don’t know the name Ian McCall by now, you soon will.

The top contender in the Tachi Palace Fights flyweight division just recently defeated Jussier da Silva, who was almost universally ranked as the top 125lb fighter, and then took out undefeated prospect Dustin Ortiz just last weekend.

Ortiz was definitely a young gun coming in to make a name off of beating McCall, but he was having none of it when they stepped in the cage together.

“I knew this kid was trying to build a name off fighting me, and I expected him to come out and be tough,” McCall told MMAWeekly.com. “He was actually tougher than I thought he’d be. Technically, I figured he would be about that level, but he was definitely tougher than I thought. I hit that kid really (expletive) hard.”

Ortiz stuck around for all three rounds, but not without losing a lopsided decision to McCall who came out on top.

Now with three wins in a row since dropping down to his natural weight division of 125lbs after exiting the WEC in 2009, McCall is happy to proclaim that he is the top of the class when it comes to the flyweights.

“Yes I am (No. 1) I know I am, but I’m still proving to people,” McCall said. “But whatever it’s not something I completely care about is rankings, I know I’m No. 1 and everyone else is going to know that soon.”

McCall has been nothing short of dominant since making his debut with Tachi Palace fights, and he’ll next appear in August when he takes on the promotion’s flyweight champion Darrell Montague.

Montague took the title from former Bellator fighter Ulysses Gomez a couple of months back and would have likely faced McCall on the show last weekend had an injury not sidelined him.

Now it appears the two flyweights are on a collision course, with the winner being able to claim the top spot as the best 125lb fighter in the sport.

“I’m super excited,” McCall stated about facing Montague. “All this work is finally coming the way it should and I’ll finally have a belt, so I’ll have something shiny to wear around my waist so I’m happy.”
