Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is turning up in unusual places, I just heard "…learn to grab it by the throat and jiu jitsu it into submission" in a Prius commercial. video
Apparently, the people responsible for marketing the new Prius want to follow the same success Fuel TV is having with men aged 18-49. "It is unbelievable how much impact the UFC has had on this network and its ratings," says George Greenberg, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Fuel TV. "We're thrilled to have the UFC as a partner driving this growth. With more upcoming live fights in April, May and through the year, we expect this trend to continue."
It's not unusual to see martial arts used in advertising, but I can't think of another time I've heard Brazilian jiu jitsu mentioned—and used as a verb.
Do Prius customers recognize BJJ?
Toyota's marketing team must feel confident that their target market will understand that reference to one of the skill sets of the mixture making up MMA. I don't know if I'm ready for a world where Prius and jiu jitsu are comfortable in the same sentence.
When I first saw the commercial, I thought I was hearing things. I replayed it on my DVR and couldn't believe my ears. I like hearing advertisers make casual references to my favorite sport—and to expect that their customers will understand what they're talking about.
Best Tweets about Prius and BJJ
Toyota USA: "Learn how to jujitsu the Game of Life into submission with these helpful tips from #Priusc." That's their spelling of jiu jitsu.
Greg Edwards ? tweeted, "@Toyota: Never heard 'jujitsu' as a verb. Maybe 'Put an armbar on operating costs'? 'Omoplata the competition'? 'Armbar high gas prices?"
Watts Krackinov: "BJJ reference in a Prius commercial… I can't get away from MMA, even if I try."
Quietly Observin: "That Prius commercial annoys me. "Jiu jitsu it into submission"
Maybe @QuietlyObservin would like this commercial better. Here's ex-UFC fighter, Kurt "the Batman" Pellegrino in his funny car commercial. video
This last tweet doesn't have anything to do with jiu jitsu, but it made me laugh.
Trista Milanovich: "Prius drivers who smoke probably don't realize how funny they look."
