Ex-UFC fighter Josh Grispi in jail for domestic violence, allegedly had dog maul wife

Former top UFC featherweight contender Josh Grispi was arrested this past Friday for assault and battery and multiple firearms charges, according to police records.

The Taunton Daily Gazette reports that Grispi, 25, allegedly abused his wife twice in four days and is being held on $100,000 bail at Plymouth House of Correction in Massachusetts after a second arrest.

According to police, Grispi allegedly had his pitbull maul his wife, who is now recovering in the hospital.

“It’s the worst case of domestic abuse I’ve ever seen,” Middleboro (Mass.) police officer Richard Harvey told the newspaper.

Grispi pleaded innocent to the charges on Tuesday in court. Two of his known former managers said they no longer work with him and declined comment when contacted today by MMAjunkie.

Grispi was first arrested for assault and battery, four counts of improper storage of a large-capacity firearm near minor, and three counts of improper storage of a rifle/shotgun near a minor, according to records. He was released on $2,000 bail, the Gazette reported.

Grispi was then arrested a second time on Monday for violating the conditions of his release and sent to jail. Police said the fighter had trained his pitbull to attack his wife and that she had been “chewed up” in an attack.

A pot farm was found when police searched his house on Monday, and guns and ammunition lay unsecured next to Grispi’s three-year-old child, the report said. The fighter’s grandmother now has custody of his children.

In addition to the assault and weapons charges, Grispi is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, violating a restraining order, animal cruelty, malicious damage to a motor vehicle and drug possession to cultivate marijuana.

Grispi last fought professionally in February 2013, whenAndy Ogle outpointed him at UFC on FUEL TV 7. It was Grispi’s fourth straight loss in the promotion, and the UFC subsequently released him from his contract.

Once a promising up-and-comer, Grispi (14-5 MMA, 0-4 UFC) won four straight fights in the now-defunct WEC before his transition to the UFC and subsequent career slide. He was tapped to fight flyweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 125, but an injury to the champ and Grispi’s subsequent loss to replacement Dustin Poirier halted the plans.
