Dominic Mazzotta down for Cody Garbrandt rematch once 'No Love' is UFC champ

Like most fighters with but a single loss on their record, Pennsylvania’s Dominic Mazzotta would like a chance to avenge the lone blemish of his career. And in a perfect world, Mazzotta would like to do it for a UFC title.

“The perfect scenario is I get to the UFC and he has the belt and I get a rematch and get to redeem myself,” Mazzotta told MMAjunkie Radio. “That’s the perfect scenario for me.”

Mazzotta (10-1) has been fighting professionally since 2013, scoring stoppages in nine of his 10 career victories to date. His one setback came early in that run, following an undefeated amateur career and an impressive start to his professional run.

The opponent: Cody Garbrandt.

“It was a fight that a lot of people called for at the time,” Mazzotta said. “We were both undefeated and dominating our regions. I don’t regret it all, but it’s definitely something that I want to eventually in the future get a shot at.”

Garbrandt earned a second-round TKO victory in that March 2014 affair, and Mazzotta admits the loss stuck with him for a bit before he could leave it behind.

“Honestly, I stressed over it a little bit when it happened at first,” Mazzotta said. “It took me six or eight months to get over it. But I learned a lot more from that loss than I have from any of my wins.”

Mazzotta has since rattled off seven consecutive wins, including six by submission. Meanwhile, Garbrandt went on to win two more times on the regional stage before getting a call to the UFC, where he has since gone 5-0, earning his way to the No. 7 slot on the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA bantamweight rankings.

Mazzotta hopes his call to a big show is coming soon, whether it be the UFC or somewhere else.

“If I get a big contract from a different organization, I’d be totally happy with that,” Mazzotta said. “I’m an exciting fighter. I’m here for the long haul. UFC gold is what I want, but I think I’ve still got some time.

“I’m chomping at the bit to get in there, but I’m patient. I know it’s a business.”

So Mazzotta will answer the phone no matter who calls. He believes his record is worthy of shot in a big show. And while he’ll sign wherever the money is right, if Garbrandt does end up getting himself a shot at the belt – and maybe even earn a UFC title – Mazzotta sure would like his chance at redemption.

“I’ll get him back one day,” Mazzotta said.
